The gray wolf is a large carnivorous mammal that is native to much of the Northern Hemisphere. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, the northern United States, Europe, Asia, and parts of the Middle East. Gray wolves can reach an average length of 4.5 to 6.5 feet and weigh anywhere from 50 to 115 pounds. Their diet primarily consists of ungulates such as deer, elk, and moose, but they will also prey on smaller mammals and birds if the opportunity arises. One interesting skeletal fact about gray wolves is that they have a flexible spine and joints that allow them to run long distances at a fast pace.
