The American bison or just bison roamed Northern America in great heads for years before American was even founded. They were almost hunted to extinction because of the fur trade and commercial hunting. The number of bison excited 60 million in the late 18th century, recovery efforts have helped the numbers grow and today there are roughly 31,000 in national parks and reserves. The American bison is the national mammal of the United States.
