The black-backed jackal is indigenous to two discrete regions of Africa, southern Africa and the East African coast. This medium-sized canid is a carnivore, primarily scavenging carrion and feeding on insects. They will also occasionally prey on small vertebrates including domestic fowl, lamb, rabbits, and antelope. Jackals, like most wild dog species, are gregarious and social and establish pack hierarchies.
