Agate /ˈæɡət/ is a rock consisting primarily of cryptocrystalline silica, chiefly chalcedony, alternating with microgranular quartz. It is characterized by its fineness of grain and variety of color. Although agates may be found in various kinds of host rock, they are classically associated with volcanic rocks and can be common in certain metamorphic rocks. They start out as air bubbles inside a layer of volcanic rock. When rain hits the rock, the rock slowly releases chemicals into the small amount of water that soaks through them. Over millions of years, this water forms tiny crystals such as clear quartz or purple amethyst crystals. The process could also form bands or stripes seen in agate. Believe it or not, there's no easy way to tell what's inside of a geode until it's cut open or broken apart.
