The Cuba hutia, also called Desmarest's hutia, is exclusive to Cuba and several nearby islands. This widespread species inhabits a variety of habitats ranging from grasslands and forests to mountains. The hutia's diet primarily consists of fruits, nuts and other plant parts, but they occasionally feed on small reptiles and insects.
